[texas] Slave Bill of Sale, 1849. Manuscript bill of sale datelined Galveston, 24 April 1849, 8 x 11 in., by which O.D. Johnson and his wife, Lucy Johnson, sell "one negro woman aged about thirty one, dark complexion, her Boy Richard aged about five years, her Boy Anderson aged about three years," for the sum of $800. Two notary public sign, one for the husband and one for the wife. Some ink erosion and toning. Most slaves in Texas came with their owners from older slave states. The 1850 Texas census reported that slaves made up 27.4% of the population.
