In 1986, to commemorate the Texas Sesquicentennial(1836-1986), the world's greatest sword maker, Wilkinson Sword, Ltd. of London, produced a small edition of three custom swords to honor the Alamo defenders and their three Texas commanders: General Sam Houston, Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the Republic of Texas, and his two Alamo commanders; Lt. Colonel William Barrett Travis (Texas Regulars), and Colonel James Bowie (Texas Volunteers). This is set number 17 of the three custom Alamo swords. Established in 1772, Wilkinson Sword, Ltd. has been the official sword-maker for the British Crown since 1824 and is universally recognized as the world's finest sword maker. Each of these three historic, ceremonial swords are custom engraved and were manufactured from the highest quality steel and to the highest standards of the sword-maker's art. They are based on historic record as replicas of the original swords used by Houston, Travis, and Bowie in 1836. Each one has been serialized to each heroic Texas figure (Houston H0017, Travis T0017, and Bowie B0017). Sam Houston sword is40" overall length, engraved with gold inlay across 34" blade, mother-of-pearl handle, brass guard with acorns, and brass lion's head pommel. Colonel William Travis sword is 41.5" overall length, with 36" blade etched with eagle, shield and flag, and floral vine scrolls. Colonel Jim Bowie sword is 39" overall length, with 33" blade with vine scroll etching, brass eagle guard, wire wrapped wood handle, and eagle's head pommel.
