(Texas - Republic) Abstract of Land Certificates (Texas - Republic) Abstract of Land Certificates,
(Texas - Republic) Abstract of Land Certificates, Reported as Genuine and Legal by the Travelling commissioners Appointed under the "Act to Detect Fraudulent Land Certificates," passed January 1840. Austin, Cruger & Wing; Printers. 1841. Quarto, 356 pages. Full gold-stamped morocco. Additional names have been added in on last blank leaf in manuscript. THE FIRST AND PROBABLY ONLY EDITION OF THE DOMESDAY BOOK OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS. THIS EXHAUSTIVE OFFICIAL DOCUMENT IS THE MOST ACCURATE AND DETAILED RECORD OF THE DISPOSITION OF LANDS IN THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS. IT IS A SYSTEMATIC ATTEMPT TO DESCRIBE EVERY LAND GRANT CERTIFIED BY THE TEXAS LAND OFFICE. The General Land Office had been created by the Act of Dec. 12, 1837. It had the responsibility of distributing vacant lands and certifying existing legitimate claims. Yoakum, p. 205, notes that "Under this law, hundreds of claims were presented and acted on early in 1838." This includes prior grants, as they had to be re-credited. Published by order of the Commissioner of the General Land Office, this document lists each grant certified by the land office from its inception to date, by county, noting the size of the grant, the date issued, and with remarks. Streeter 453 says of this volume: "It is an invaluable source of data on individuals and it shows quite conclusively the extent to which land in the thirty counties listed had been taken up. Harris County leads with thirty-six pages of names under the various subdivisions followed by Red River county with twenty-seven pages. Two pages required for Refugion County who its slight settlement at that time" RARE. Streeter notes that only 200 compilations were printed. Sabin 95045.
