1887 Winchester riot gun. Manufactured in1889. The barrel length is 21" making it easy to carry in a saddle scabbard, Because of its relatively short length,it was favored by many early Texas Rangers and peace officers.
This particular piece was carried by Texas Ranger James William King. King was born in Arkansas in and James and his family moved to Rusk county, Texas just after the Civil War. James acted as a cowboy and a herdsman until joining the Texas Rangers in1882. King served in one previous Ranger Company before transferring , in 1887, to Major Jones' D Company, frontier Battalion. Ranger James King was dismissed from the Texas Rangers in 1889 and went undercover. On 11 February 1890. he was assassinated by three outlaws in Zavala county,Texas and is buried in Loma Vista cemetery, Zavala county Texas.
