This 19th century handmade Texas tapered leg table constructed of cypress and pine is attributed to the craftsmanship of Dominic Neff, French immigrant master cabinetmaker. This kitchen or worktable measures 31-1/2" tall, 34-1/4" wide and 62" long. The table contains a single overlapping drawer with dovetail construction.

The two-board cypress top overlaps the skirt by 5-3/4". Sliding half dovetails cut into the notched cleats and top completed the assembly and insure a secure fit. Unlike other cabinetmakers, which concealed the cleats, Neff attached his cleats outside the skirt as well as extended them the full width of the tabletop. The skirt and square tapered legs contain mortise and tenon construction and the joints are secured by pegs. The legs are 2-5/8" square at the top and taper on the inside to 1-/34" square at the foot. The table has two 14-1/2" X 34-1/2" removable leaves (replacements), which extends the length of the table to 92". The origin leaves were attached to the end of the table by two hinges, concealed staves were pulled through the skirt to support the leaves for additional work surface.

This table somewhat resembling the table once owned by R. Q. Johnson of Castroville, pictured and described on page 194 of Texas Furniture, The Cabinetmakers and Their Works, 1840-1880. Following Mr. Johnson's death, his collection was separated. Neff immigrated to Texas in ____. The 1860 Federal Census listed Neff as a 46-year-old carpenter, residing in Castroville. These tables share the exposed cleats and removable top. Single drawer, lift top, 34''x62''x31''
