<B>Texas Heroes</B></I> Manuscript Document Signed "<I>Allen Caruthers</B></I>," "<I>J.M. Bell</B></I>," "<I>John York</B></I>," "<I>N.W. Eastland/Judge of Probate</B></I>," and "<I>Benjamin Harrell</B></I>," 1.5 pages, 8" x 10", front and verso. Republic of Texas, Fayette County, April 26, 1841. In part, "<I>Know all men by these presents that we Sarah Miles as Principal Allen Caruthers and J.M. Bell as Securities are held and firmly bound in the penal sum of two thousand Dollars to N.W. Eastland Judge of Probate for the County of Fayette and his successors in office for the Payment of which will and truly to be made we bind ourselves and each of us...</B></I>" Sarah Miles had been appointed Administrator of the Estate of Benjamin McDaniel Deceased; she has signed with her "<I>x</B></I>" mark. Signed by York and Harrell as witnesses. <B>Allen Caruthers</B></I> fought at San Jacinto in Captain William Hill's Company. <B>James Madison Bell</B></I> served in the company of his future father-in-law, Capt. <B>John York</B></I>, in the storming and capture of Bexar, December 5-10, 1835. First Corporal J.M. Bell participated in the Battle of San Jacinto in Capt. Moseley Baker's "San Felipe Company." In 1848, marauding Lipan Indians from Coahuila, Mexico entered Texas. To repel them, a company of volunteers, commanded by York, was raised in DeWitt County. In a fight on the banks of the Escondido Creek, Capt. York and his son-in-law, J.M. Bell, were killed. The bodies of York and Bell were buried in a single hand-made oak coffin in the York Cemetery about eight miles east of Yorktown. <B>Nicholas W. Eastland</B></I> came to Texas in 1834, and was a volunteer soldier in Captain A. C. Horton's Company, Col. Fannin's Command, in the spring of 1836. He was at Goliad but was one of those who escaped capture on March 19th being in the advance guard with Horton.
