[texas] George W. Smyth-- Signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence (1803-1866) Early Texas surveyor and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. He was elected a member of the Convention of 1836 by the residents of Jasper Minicipality and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence. He was also a member of the boundary commission that was to set the Texas-United States boundaries in 1839, was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1844 and took part in the convention that drew up the Texas Constitution of 1845. He served as commissioner of the General land Office from 1848-1852. Document signed ("Geo. W. Smyth") as Commissioner of the General Land Office, 14 x 12 in., Austin, 14 January 1850. Coutersigned by P.H. Bell, Governor of Texas. A land grant of 320 acres in Limestone County to Emil Simmler. Fold wear and overall toning.
