This 19th century draw leaf extension table with tapered legs contains a single drawer. The table is constructed with mortise and tenon and dovetail construction using pine and ash. German immigrant cabinetmakers residing in Austin, Fayette and Washington Counties commonly combined these and other species of wood, especially when the piece was painted or varnished.
The table measures 29" tall, 37" wide and 78" long when fully extended. The top contains four ¾"X9-1/2" heart pine boards, which is framed and mitered at the corners. These boards are tenoned into the mortised frame, which are exposed. The extensions rest below the top and contain two battens, which provides the sliding mechanism. The two-board extension leaves are similarly constructed as that of the top. However, the heart pine boards are oriented normal the "exposed" top. The mortise and tenon frame is made of ash. The 1"x5-1/2" skirt recessed to the tapered legs. The skirt contains two notches, which allows the battens to slide upon. The legs are 2-5/8" square at the top and taper on the inside to 1-3/8" square at the floor. The exposed corners of the leg is rounded over. A single drawer is located on the narrow side of the table. The edges of the drawer front is rounded over and overlaps the skirt. It is joined using dovetail construction. The drawer bottom is chamfered to fit the dadoed drawer runners. The drawer contains a mortise lock. The inside of the drawer reveals the original paint color. Missing a drawer pull.
