This handcrafted four (4) door cupboard or china press was most likely the work of an East Texas master cabinetmaker. This classic yet, functional styled case probably made in the last half of the 19th Century.
The cabinet measures 79" tall, 45" wide and 19" deep. Mortise and tenon joinery secures the 1"X3-3/4" walnut stock frame. The joints contain pegs. The sides of the case continue the vertical two-panel style. The rear of the cupboard is composed of seven (7) vertical ¾"X5-3/4"X77" tongue and groove boards, which are nailed to the five (5) shelves measuring 1"X16"X42" and secures at the sides with a chamfered tongue and accepted by the grooved styles.
The doors contain flat panels, with interior chamfers, which are irregular indicating hand plaining. With tenon rails and mortise styles are dadooed to receive the floating panels. The upper and lower set of doors are separated by a 1"X4-5/8"X36" rail.
The upper set of flat panel doors measure 18"X41" and contain two (2) vertical floating panels measuring 5"X34-1/2". They are separated by a 2-5/8" wide style. The doors cover three shelves. The outer styles of the door are beveled and contain a Victorian latch with missing porcelain knob.
The lower set of doors measure 18"X25" and when opened, expose two (2) shelves. There is no latch. The panels measure 5"X18".
A beveled cornice molding measuring 1"X3-1/4" adorns the top of the case as attests to the utilitarian and functional design.
