[texas] Bishop John M. Odin - First Catholic Bishop of Texas (1801-1870) French-born missionary who came to America to minister to the Indians. Texas was made a diocese in 1847 two years after Texas became a state and Odin served as the first Catholic bishop of Texas. Bishop Odin's see was fixed at Galveston (1847-1861); he was promoted to archbishop of New Orleans in 1861. Autograph document signed on verso of document headed "Republic of Texas County of Galveston," as bishop of the Roman Catholic Church for Texas, 7¾ x 7½ in. Galveston, 7 June 1842. Odin confirms that he married Joseph Ariega and Mary Martin in the presence of two witnesses.
