This 19th century Texas bedstead was most likely handmade by a German immigrant cabinetmaker residing in Austin or Fayette County. This pine and cypress bedstead measures 36" tall, 49-1/2" wide and 75-1/2" long and is constructed using mortise and tenon joinery. At first glance, the bedstead has marginal appeal; however, the cabinetmaker adorned it with an unusual amount of molding. The overall design is similar to the bedstead described and photograph on pages of 120 and 121, respectively of the "Witte Book."

The most prominent features of the bedstead are the raised panels and scrolled bedrails. The cabinetmaker selected ___" wide planks and ___" square posts. The crest of the head and footboard consist of a three-quarter profile cylinder with a slight taper at each end, atop a cove molded rail. The assembly is attached with square nails. Below the crest rail is a framework of molded rails, styles and chamfered panel. The large panels are chamfered on each side. The exterior side has a decorative cove molding accenting the panel.
