Eyre T. Crowe, English painter (1824-1910), spent his childhood in Paris where his father, the historian Eyre Evans Crowe, was foreign correspondent for the Morning Chronicle. His younger brother was the art historian J. A. Crowe and his cousin was the novelist and writer on art William Thackeray. As immersed as his family was in history, Crowe became a painter of historical subjects, domestic genre and portraits.
At the age of fifteen, he became a pupil of Paul Delaroche (French painter, 1797-1856). A trip to Rome introduced Crowe to a fellow student, Jean-Leon Gerome (French painter and sculptor, 1824-1904), who remained a lifelong friend. After returning to London in 1845, Crowe entered the Royal Academy School and exhibited his first picture at the Royal Academy the following year.
