Tenting on the Plains w/ Elizabeth Custer Letter
Elizabeth B. Custer: First Edition with a Signed Letter from the Author, of Tenting on the Plains, or General Custer in Kansas and Texas. By Elizabeth B. Custer. (New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1887). First edition, and with an autograph letter signed by Elizabeth B. Custer and dated Jan. 7, 55. Octavo (9” x 5.5”). xiii, 702 pages. Illustrated. Publisher's brown cloth decoratively stamped in gilt, blue, red and white, and lettered in gilt and blind. General light wear around the board edges, and at the top and bottom of the spine, hinges starting with previous repair to the front hinge, remnants of labels removed from front and rear endpapers, front free endpaper with repaired tear, perhaps an ex-library copy with the only markings being a string of ink numbers at the bottom of the dedication page. Altogether a very clean, handsome copy in very good condition. Elizabeth Custer's letter is on watermarked laid note paper measuring 8.5” x 5.5”, with three folds and slight splitting at the center corner of the folds. There is a dampstain to the outer margins of the page, affecting about 16 words and the end of her signature. The letter is in eleven lines, and begins: “My Dear Mr. Hall, The way you have mentioned by name is perfectly satisfactory to me…” The book and letter are housed together in a quarter morocco over marbled paper slipcase with a book-back spine in six compartments with five raised bands and gilt lettering and rules.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
