Tenth Century Koran Manuscript Leaf on Vellum.
Tenth Century Koran Manuscript Leaf on Vellum.  A rare Koran manuscript leaf, from the tenth century, written on vellum in large Andalusian script, famous for its handsome, elegant, and austere characters. The leaf measures approximately 17.5 x 18.5 cm and consists of 6 lines of text, written in brown ink on vellum, with diacritical marks in different colors.  The large circles indicade indicate the end of a verse. Fathah, kasrah, dammah, and tanwīn are indicated in red, while shaddah in green. Hamzatu-l-wasl and are indicated in green dot, and sukūn in green circle. The paint used for Hamzatu-l-wasl corroded the vellum underneath. The leaf begins in the middle of Verse 13, Chapter 13 (al-Ra`d) and ends in the middle of Verse 15 of the same chapter. As you can see from the pictures, the leaf is slightly affected by dampness, still an excellent example for this age.  (See Martin Lings’ THE QURANIC ART OF CALLIGRAPHY AND ILLUMINATION)
