Placer gold was discovered in the Ducktown area in 1843. It was found by a prospector who was panning for gold when he found copper nuggets. The first shipment wasn't made until 1847. A smelter was built in 1854 to really help production. More than 30 mining companies were incorporated between 1852 and 1855 to mine the copper. Mining ceased when Union troops destroyed the copper refinery in 1863. Some mining resumed in 1866 and continued until 1878 when the high grade copper ran out. Production of copper ranged from 9,000 to 15,000 ounces in massive sulfides. Unique small size stock certificate. Number 17 for one share to Stehen Hills Junior. Signed by secretary Andrew Cochran and president Edward W David. Vignettes include an eagle holding an American flag, steam coal train rumbling through the country seide, etc. One small pinhole and very small tear in upper right. Other than that it is in near perfect condition. (Al Adams Gold Rush Memorabilia Collection) Date: 1849 Location: Ducktown, Tennessee HWAC# 57300
