Ten Different Views of Edward Everett - CDVs
Ten Different Views of Edward Everett - Cartes de Visite. Edward Everett should have gone down in history for delivering an amazing oration at Gettysburg; however, his two hour exercise in prose and prolixity is almost forgotten due to the ten lines spoken by Abraham Lincoln, known as the Gettysburg address. After Lincoln's famous remarks Everett said: "I should be glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near the central idea of the occasion in two hours, as you did in two minutes." Everett served in many capacities aside from second fiddle: U.S. Representative, Senator, President of Harvard University, and Vice Presidential Candidate. This lot offers 10 views of Everett, all from life, and all displaying his extreme dignity and pensive nature. The nineteenth century Demosthenes is shown, for the most part, standing, wearing a dark suit and looking off into the distance. His features seem to suggest someone forever lost in thought or pondering his next sentence. One photograph features Everett seated among other fellows from Harvard. All are in fine or better condition; most are clean and crisp; a few have light overall toning; some bear pencil marks on versos and rectos.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
