<B>Teke (Democratic Republic of Congo)</B></I><BR>Power Figure<BR>Wood<BR>Height: 12 7/8 inches Width: 2 1/2 inches Depth: 3 1/4inches<BR><BR>The central cavity of this figure once contained power materials chosen as specific to its precise context. These brought the spirit's presence, which was the active element of the power figure. From the surface wear over the rest of the body area, it is likely that the empowering materials once fully encased the body. The squared beard and the form of round cap are both attributes of a chief. The head is in very good condition. Most of the rest of the body, where it was encased, is abraded and shows insect damage. There are minor losses on both heels.<BR><BR>Provenance: H.
