Teesto Trading Post was a remote store in the southwestern part of the rez, north of Winslow. It was not a large store but had regular clientele that traded saddle blankets. It was a busy post until the 1960s. We did a lot of business with saddle blankets and piñons. There were five stores within a twenty-mile radius including Teesto, Dilkon, White Cone, Indian Wells, and Bitahoochee. These stores combined for over 150 saddle blankets a week. I made regular trips during holidays and summers to pick up the loads. Two things prompted its demise of this store. First came a new road between Winslow and Hopi, which bypassed the store. That was followed by relocation of many Navajo families following the settlement of the Navajo/Hopi Land Dispute. The store had been built by Jimmy McJunkin in 1915 and stayed in his family until it closed in 1981. After Jimmy died in 1970, his widow and son continued the post with managers until it closed.
