Itzchak Tarkay was born in 1935 in Subotica on the Yugoslav-Hungarian border. At the end of the W.W.II, Tarkay, only nine years old, was sent to the Mathausen concetration camp by the Nazis.
He returned to his home after the war and developed an interest in art. He won a prize for excellence in painting while still at school in Subotica. In 1949 he and his family immigrated to Israel. The next two years were spent in a Kibbutz. In 1951, he received a scholarship to the Bezalel Art Academy where he studied for one year. In order to continue his scholarship, he was allowed to study under the artist Schwartzman until his mobilization in the Israeli army. Tarkay returned to his familiar enviroment in Tel Aviv and enroled in the Avni Institute of Art that he completed in 1956. The teachers who taught at the institute were Mokady, Janco, Schtreichman, Stematsky and later Rosentalis.
Tarkay has since exhibited both in Israel and abroad, and his works can be found in many public and private collections.
During the last years his work was displayed in Israel, USA, Germany, England, Japan, Northern Ireland, France and Spain.
