Target Comics #5 (Novelty Press, 1940) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages. Some comics are cool. Even fewer are truly significant. Fewer still are scarce. Target #5, with its electrifying Bill Everett cover, is all three. Most importantly, this issue contains the first appearance of the greatest creation of one of the most original artists ever to work in comics, the legendary Basil Wolverton. His unusual style, a combination of "big foot" humans, phallic flora, and intestinal aliens, was rendered with lovingly detailed stippling. It is his science fiction work for Space Hawk, which premiered in this issue, that many consider his best work. Wolverton labored alone doing the writing, penciling, inking, and lettering for his stories, which severely limited his output. The Space Hawk story in this issue, at 11 pages, is much longer than usual. Additionally this issue contains a compelling White Streak story by Carl Burgos, and White Streak's origin is recorded, in text, for the first time. According to the CGC census there is only one copy that is slightly better in NM- 9.2 condition. This is certainly one of the most desirable copies of this scarce issue, and the finest graded copy ever offered at auction. Overstreet 2002 NM 9.4 value = $5,000. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
