1909, 1929 - A fun and interesting lot of 3 mining-related items for the curious collector, including: 1) A 3.25" x 2.25" x 1.25" heavyweight card box with folding metal fasteners. Cover label reads "Engineers, Prospectors, Students/ Assay for/ Gold, Silver, Lead, Copper/ and other/ Valuable metals/ Tapie Pocket Smelter/ Santa Barbara, Calif./ Pat. Pend./ Price $1.00". This fascinating pocket smelting kit is complete and includes simple metal tweezers, a galvanized metal tray for smelting, and one dozen wafers (perhaps made of paper pulp) with 9 depressions in each. The instructions, included, advise adding lode or vein samples to the depressions in the wafer, and then setting it on fire on the smelting tray. "With the small tweezers provided in the kit remove the charred mass and examine it with a magnifying glass. The metal will be plainly visible by moving slightly the fussed pulp." The instructions also indicate that one dozen replacement wafers can be ordered for $1.00. This charming kit is in very fine condition. 2) A 4.25" long ribbon medal with a top vignette of a train over a bridge and "Johnstown, PA". The red, white, and blue ribbon reads, in gold, "State/ Mine Inspector/ Kansas/ City/ The Heart of America" and a 1" round medal with a vignette of a man tending a wounded miner hangs from the ribbon. The reverse of this medal reads "International First Aid and/ Mine-Rescue Contest/ Kansas City Missouri/ Sept. 12-13-14 1929". 3) A 4.75" long ribbon medal with "Central Labor Union" inscribed at top. The gold ribbon reads "Miners`/ Entertainment/ Committee/ Indianapolis/ 1909" and the Indiana-shaped medal hanging below includes place names. -61643
