Taos Micaceous Clay Pottery Pitcher by V. Romero
Native American Taos Pueblo Micaceous Clay Pottery Pitcher by Virginia T. Romero (1896 - 1998), measures 5'' x 6'' and is signed on the bottom, FYI: ''The daughter of Jose Pablo and Teodorita Martinez Trujillo, Virginia was born on ancestral land in September 1896. Her parents named her Pop To, which means ''Flower House'' in her native Tiwa language.Romero was an important force in keeping micaceous pottery alive. She utilized traditional potting and firing techniques that have, in recent years, become threatened by the availability of non-traditional clays and firing technologies. Like other Pueblo potters, she likely learned to make pottery by observing women in her family and community. As the mother of ten, she supported her family by selling pots to locals and tourists. She spoke proudly of never losing a pot during the outdoor firing process since she first started making pottery in 1919. She attributed this success to her clay, which she ground to a fine mixture.''
