Tanjore painting

Tanjore painting is a classical South Indian painting style, which emerged in the town of Thanjavur (Tanjore) in the 18th century. Paintings of this kind usually feature rich, flat and vivid colors, a simple composition, glittering gold foils and inlaid glass beads or even gemstones. Traditionally the subjects are Hindu deities and saints. The works were generally executed on canvas, wood panels, glass, paper, ivory or entire walls and served as devotional icons.



Condition: The work is overall in good condition. The canvas is laid on board. There is color flaking here and there, especially along the edges as well as partly to the figures. Some retouchings to the paint and gold can be seen. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 60 x 49.5 cm.
