Roc

Tang Dynasty reproduction of a Mythical huge bird, with a wingspan of 30 paces that is capable of carrying off an elephant. It is so large that drinking cups can be made of its nails.

Also Called Ruc, Rukh, Rukhkh, or Chinese Pyong

Described By: Marco Polo- "it was for all the world like an eagle, but one indeed of enormous size; so big in fact, that its wings covered an extent of 30 paces, and its quills were 12 paces long, and thick in proportion. And it is so strong that it will seize an Elephant in its talons, and carry him high into the air, and drop him so that he is smashed to pieces."

May also be the extinct wingless Elephant Bird of Madagascar, whose egg has a liquid capacity of 2.35 gallons.

Tales from the Arabian Nights relate encounters with the Roc (or Rukh), a giant bird said to be capable of carrying off an elephant. In two of the stories Sinbad the sailor tangles with the Roc, and he is carried off by one. The two other stories about the Roc feature Abd al-Rahman. Italian explorer Marco Polo mentions the Roc in his journals. Envoys from Madagascar presented Roc feathers to the Chinese ruler. Madagascar was indeed formerly the home of a giant bird, the elephant bird Aepyornis maximus, now extinct. However, unlike the Roc, the elephant bird could not fly.
