Made-for-the-tomb chicken that came from South China….and was purchased in Flushing, NY about 12 years ago from a Chinese dealer who brought it out. He stated: Tang to my friend, and that seems right to me today. The lower elite did NOT have the funds to get the wonderful glazed ceramics, so settled for ordinary pottery "mingqi" to accompany them into the afterlife. 6-1/4" wide by 5-1/8' tall. Painted black over red clay, there are small surface losses among the still adhering tomb dirt and a chip on the bottom footrim. Otherwise....an early abstracted form that foretold of Picasso and the 20th Century abstract art movements....Nah, just kidding.
