</font></strong>These four matching, hand-hewn primitive country ladder-back side chairs are truly a colonial artisan craftsman's work of art. They are incredibly strong and well-crafted, with beautiful lines, especially the graceful chair backs with tall finials and four back slats. The lower part of the chair has straight and simple lines, with more curves and turnings in the upper part of the chair. They have never been refinished and have the deep, glowing, original patina that is so treasured by collectors.

The only concern that I find with these chairs is that the seats need to be replaced and that on one chair only, dowel across the back of the seat, on which the fiber for the seat would be woven, has been broken into. However, the break is such that I believe that it could be effectively repaired rather than requiring replacement but the final decision on this would have to be between the new owner and the person who will be doing the repair. The seat construction indicates that they were originally caned but that the caning was replaced at some point with the imitation leather covering and padding that is on them now. The padding is on a flat board foundation that has been attached to the chair by small screws.

The wood of the chairs is a rich, honey-color and he lines are quite lovely and well proportioned.

Measurements are as follows: just under 42-1/2 inches from the top of the finial to the floor. Approximately 26-1/2 inches from the top of finial to the bottom ...
