c1900 This military camp photo is unidentified but the photographer is identified as M.D. Boland (Marvin Dement, 1873-1950), who was a well-known photographer of the area. The photo measures 8 x 35.” This is very possibly Camp Lewis—later Fort Lewis—established in 1917 and named for Captain Meriwether Lewis of Lewis and Clark fame. Boland was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and moved to Tacoma in 1912 to teach “manual arts.” From 1915-1949 he owned a number of photo studios in downtown Tacoma. He photographed a wide variety of subjects—mainly anything that caught his interest—including architecture, landscapes, celebrities, and industry photos. He died with camera in hand in 1950 [Ref: digital.lib.washington.edu › …]. - HKA#65912
