Hayes as President of the United States is seen as one of the most hotly contested elections in the history of the American nation to this very day. Second only to the disputed election of 2000, the election of 1876 was only decided following the creation of a special electoral commission. Examining and recounting the Electoral votes from a number of closely contested states, this commission was finally able to put an end to this political battle just after four a.m. on March 8, 1877, when, after completing a recount of Electoral votes from Wisconsin, it declared Hayes and Wheeler victorious.
