TYLER, JOHN
(1790 - 1862) Tenth President of the United States following the death of Harrison, annexed Texas, and remained loyal to Virginia following its secession. An especially rare, authentically signed land grant to an Indian chief, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, July 8, 1842. This partly-printed document, almost always seen secretarially-signed after 1832, grants a tract of 321 acres in the ""Talapoosa Land District, Alabama"" to Creek Indian Chief Ar-har-locco-yoholo, likely as payment for land ceded under treaty to the United States. By law, Tyler was obliged to personally sign grants giving land to Indians. Mouse-chewed along two folds, backed on verso and could be restored, signature and seal not affected, as is the great majority of the text.
