c1840s-A complete, 7-piece Whiskey Still. This was found in a dug-out in the Nueces strip, a contested area of ownership between Texas and Mexico, in the first half of the 19th century. Free from authority and thus the law, the Nueces strip garnered and protected numerous characters of the west including ex. Mountain Men, Comancheros, disposed Delaware Indians, cattle thieves, horse thieves, and bandits of several nationalities including Mexico and the Republic of Texas. The complete still includes: 1) The wicker bound glass bottle measures 20" high x 15" wide, and many of the canes surrounding the glass are broken and missing. The interior of the bottle is dirty, but the glass itself seems intact. Aqua glass. 2) The mash bucket, severely worn through on the bottom due to the caustic reaction to the copper, measures 16" across the mouth by 11" tall. Very fragile. 3) Two metal bases on which to set the still equipment. 4) The 2-part still chamber. The hand pounded copper is jointed with lead solder and leather rivets. The lead would eventually bring death for the avid imbiber of this whiskey, but due to the dedicated mayhem of their lives, few lived long enough to be effected by it. 5) A cooling coil, used to decant the product into its intended container.
