c1920-1951-Extremely collectible lot of 2 pairs of spurs made by famous Texan bit and spurmaker Oscar Crockett. 1) Stainless steel spurs with brass band design in a pattern of upright and inverted “V’s,” with 5-point brass rowels, and brass rowel pin cover. Handtooled leather straps attached. 2) Black polished steel bands measuring 5/8” wide, with engraved silver decorative plate and stripes on outside band. Stainless steel small 10-point rowels. Unmarked, no straps. The "V" design and incising on buttons are typical Crockett trademarks, plus the rowel pin covering.
“The Crocketts stood apart from the other major makers of the 1920s because they came from a cowboy background. As a youth, Oscar Crockett (1887-1948, Pecos, TX) watched his cowboy brother Arthur make spurs. He later formed C&G Bits and Spurs, a partnership which he built with another young blacksmith, in 1914. The line was bought by C. P. Shipley (who had bought a few pair at the stockyard sales) when Oscar was in his mid-twenties, and he stayed on to manage the line for the Shipley company. After the War, Oscar and his brother Arthur were both back working in C. P. Shipley`s bit and spur department.
