TWO VOLS. HARPERS WEEKLY, 1857-1858.
TWO VOLS. HARPERS WEEKLY, 1857-1858. Vols. I & II of Harper's Weekly, Nos. 1 through 104. Both folio, bound in half-calf with marbled boards, ex lib. Vol. I is missing part of spine, significant wear to cover, but binding still tight on the publications themselves. These volumes have the usual wide range of subjects characteristic of Harpers, from travel -- with illustrations of places from China to India to Kabul to France and the Amazon; profiles of politicians, soldiers and other significant players, such as Jefferson Davis (U.S. Senator from Mississippi at the time, and ends with the statement "He is a man of whom Mississippi may well be proud."), Edward Everett, Thomas Benton, and Winfield Scott, roughly every other week, many of their portraits being lithographed from Brady photos; a number of full-page illustrations of steam-sailing vessels, including several articles over the 2 years on the Leviathan; a number of articles on the laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable including the celebration at the end in the Sept. 11, 1858 edition; a number of articles on Provo and Salt Lake, Utah (and the Mormons in general); a series on "Travel notes in Bible Lands;" Frontier life in Washington Territory and Indians of the Plains and Seminoles of Florida; significant events such as the completion of the new wings on the Capitol building in Washington, the burning of City Hall and the fire at the Crystal Palace, NY, the funeral of General Smith in Cincinnati; plus the usual fashion notes, political and social cartoons, and holiday-related issues. Generally very good to good condition. Vol. I has a few torn pages, but all pages appear to be present.
