TWO TINTYPES OF ID'D 4TH WI LIGHT ARTILLERYMAN. A pair of sixth-plate tintypes taken at the same sitting and identified with period ink inscriptions pinned to the pillow as "Dr. Harrison Daniel Bullard of Delevan, Wisc." showing Bullard wearing the caduceus chevrons of a hospital steward. Bullard is shown in the armed view with an M1840 NCO sword and small revolver tucked into his belt seated next to a stand draped with an American flag. In the second view Bullard has removed his sword belt and stands next to the flag. Bullard enlisted in the 4th Wisconsin Battery on September 14, 1861 and mustered out October 4, 1864. Organized at Beloit, Wisconsin the battery was one of a few "Badger" units sent east where it served mostly as garrison artillery. The battery witnessed the famous engagement between the Monitor and Virginia while manning the heavy guns at Fortress Monroe. Both six-plates are in EXC condition with strong clarity but just slightly dark. One view is housed in a black gutta percha case and the other in a composition case.
