TWO SAMPLERS.
Probably English, silk on wool. One signed "Mary Smith, July 27th 1840/ Aged 11 Years" with minutely stitched pairs of flowering baskets, peacocks and pine trees and pious verse. Closely worked border. In bird's-eye frame, 15 1/2" h. 15 1/2" w. And a sampler signed "Jane Ensor Preston School Aged 14 Years 1856". Pairs of potted bluebells and spaniels with stylized floral band and large floral spray, also wrought in minute stitches. In a frame, 16 1/2"h. 16 1/4"w.


Condition: Mary Smith's sampler has bright colors on a clean background and a few holes in the ground. The 2nd has a toned background and edge loss.
