The bronze horse bucks onto its hind legs resisting a force thebeholder cannot see. The horse kicks his forelegs into the air as helets out a authoritative neigh of discontent. It balances upon asphere that is decorated with dragon-like legs. The sculpturewas cast using the age-old method of lost-wax casting and stained witha brown patina finish for perpetuation. He is mounted upon a bronzeplinth with the artist Barye's signature.Antoine-Louis Barye (September 24, 1796 June 25, 1875) was a Frenchsculptor most famous for his work as an animalier, a sculptor ofanimals.Born in Paris, Barye began his career as a goldsmith, likemany sculptors of the Romantic Period. After studying under sculptorFrancois-Joseph Bosio and painter Baron Antoine-Jean Gros he was in1818 admitted to the cole des Beaux Arts. But it was not until 1823,while working for Fauconnier, the goldsmith, that he discovered histrue predilection from watching the animals in the Jardin des Plantes,making vigorous studies of them in pencil drawings comparable to thoseof Delacroix, then modelling them in sculpture on a large or smallscale.
