Most Spanish colonial espada anchas encountered are Mexican turn of the century swords. The stirrup tilt exampled here is definitely earlier, the branched saber hilted knife is more typical of late 19th century/early 20th century but unusual as a bowie. 1) 24 1/2" Overall, 19 1/2" blade w/ integral forged stepped pedestal at ricasso, deep choil, blade is saber ground w/ 6" false edge clip. Iron mounted stirrup shape knuckle bow, iron ferrule polished bone grip. CONDITION: very good overall, iron patina, lg. 1/4" chip from cutting edge along w/ a few sm. nicks, bends & tip is restored, repointed. Grip has 2 long cracks unaffecting overall aesthetics. 2) 16 1/2" Overall, 11 1/2" blade, 1 1/2" wide w/ 2" sharpened false edge. CONDITION: good to very good overall, iron patina w/ pitting. Brass ferrules & pommel cap have dark olive/mustard patina. Polished bone grip has smooth patina w/ numerous cracks & raw hide cord wrapped near base. PROVENANCE: From the Robert Vines Collection.
