TWO JOSIAH LORING 12-INCH TABLETOP GLOBES.
Josiah Loring, 1775-ca.1840, Boston, Massachusetts. The two comprising a celestial globe (ca. 1833) and a terrestrial globe (ca. 1844). The celestial globe identified as follows within a rondel inscribed "Loring's Celestial Globe Containing all the known Stars, Nebulae &c. Compiled from the Works of Wollaston, Flamsted, De la Caille, Havelius, Mayer, Bradley, Herschel, Maskelyne. The Transactions of the Astronomical Society of London &c. &c. (From Smith's New English Globe.) Boston, Josiah Loring, 136 Washington St. 1833. Annin & Smith sc." The globe with actual drawings and renderings of the various constellations of both hemispheres. Mounted within a brass meridian set within the mahogany horizon ring with printed astronomical and zodiac data on a frame with turned legs and cross stretcher. The terrestrial globe identified as follows within a rondel inscribed: "Loring's Terrestrial Globe Containing, all the Late Discoveries and Geographical Improvements, also the Tracks of the Most Celebrated Circumnavigators. Compiled from Smith's New English Globe, with Additions and Improvements by Annin & Smith." Beneath this reads: "BOSTON, Josiah Loring. 136 Washington St_1844". The original four-legged maple stand with mahogany horizon right (with printed astronomical and zodiac data), maple stretchers, brass meridian, brass hour pointer at top and galottes engraved with hour rings in both directions. Loring created this handsome globe during his first year of independent production. SIZE: Overall: 18" h x 16-3/4" dia. 12" globe as noted. CONDITION: Both globes with general craquelure and toning. The celestial globe with early damages and repairs at top of globe and with wear and losses to dial paper on mahogany horizon ring. Otherwise good. The terrestrial globe also with old damages and repair in North polar region and with losses to paper on horizon, minimal in nature. Otherwise good. 9-90307
