TUNNEY, GENE
(1898 - 1978) American boxer who defeated Jack Dempsey twice for the heavyweight championship. Fine content T.L.S. "Gene" on Derman Tire & Rubber Co. letterhead, 2pp. 4to., New York, Feb. 8, 1951, to his longtime friend Robert Gros. In part: "…Each day the occupant of the White House [Truman] gets more irresponsible. His latest act of incredible folly is that in which he called over the members of the Federal Reserve Board and its committee on open market operations. The Federal Reserve Board was set up by Congress to protect the economy at all times. That is, protect the economy in so far as loans, credits and money rates go. The Board is to be free from any Presidential, Treasury or Congressional pressure. If you read the minutes of the meeting at the White House, you would see how palpably ignorant of its functions the President is; but because he is President, he thinks they all work for him. Eisenhower made a fine impression not only in Europe, but in Congress when he came back to make an extemporaneous report. Without doubt, he is the smartest politician who ever wore a uniform of the United States military forces….It begins to look as if Truman would like to have him take his place in 1952. It is important to remember that if Truman willingly gives up the candidacy for the election, he would want a friendly successor if possible…If Eisenhower gets the nod, he will beat the Republican candidate whoever he is….". Staple holes at top left, boldly signed and very good.
