TUNNEY, GENE
(1898 - 1978) American boxer who defeated Jack Dempsey twice for the heavyweight championship. Very early I.S.P. 5" x 7" b/w, a full-length pose of the 21-year-old Tunney in a boxing stance, signed at bottom: "To my admirer John Egbert with my best wishes 'Gene' Tunney". Ink just the slightest bit light, else near fine. Also signed by Parisian photographer R. Sobol. Accompanied by a program, 4pp. 8vo., Paris, Apr. 26, 1919, an Allied Expeditionary Force group of inter-service bouts which also included Tunney (split at folds). The previous January, Tunney had fought Bob Martin to become the Heavyweight Champion of the American Expeditionary Forces in France. Previously, Tunney had defeated 20 opponents in France in a light-heavyweight elimination series, and on April 26th won the Light Heavyweight championship.
