TRUMBULL, JONATHAN
(1710 - 1785) Governor of Connecticut during the American Revolution who was critical in providing necessary supplies to the Continental Army. Good content war-date A.L.S. 1p. legal folio, Lebanon, Conn., Sept. 5, 1779 to Deputy Q.M.G. Nehemiah Hubbard forwarding intelligence. Still reeling from raids on New Haven, Norwalk and Fairfield in July, the governor writes in part: ""...The General [Washington?] thinks by his intelligence, The Troops arrived with Admiral Arbuthonot not more tan 4,000 -- some make their number a good deal less -- He cannot think they are to be directed against Connecticut..."". Trumbull has also addressed the letter in his hand adding his franking signature on the integral address leaf on the verso. Indeed their assumption was correct: Arbuthonot remained in northern waters due to a possible threat from D'Estaing but his troops did not act against the state. Light soiling, a few chips at extreme left margin, otherwise very good.
