TRUMAN, HARRY S.
(1884 - 1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. Scarce D.S. boldly signed ""Harry Truman"""" as President, 1p. folio, Washington, Jan. 5, 1950, in full: ""To the Senate of the United States: I nominating Honorable Irving R. Kaufman of New York to be United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. He is now serving under a recess appointment"". Framed with another D.S., 1p. folio, Washington, Apr. 4, 1950, marked ""Copy"" at top, concerning the Senate's appointment of Kaufman while that government branch was in Executive session. IRVING KAUFMAN (1910-1992) was a noted judge of U. S. District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1949 and judge of U. S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit from 1961 -1987. He is best remembered as the presiding judge in the Ethel and Julius Rosenberg espionage case, sentencing the couple to death for selling atomic secrets to the Russians. Judge Kaufman also sided with John Lennon after a lengthy battle in the U.S. court system over whether Lennon could remain in the U. S. after the famous ""Beatle"" pleaded guilty to drug charges in England. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Contemporary framed with various nicks to the molding. Very slight toning to documents, overall very good to fine.
