TRUMAN, HARRY S.
(1884 - 1972) 33rd President of the United States who led the country in the closing days of World War II and through the re-building of Europe under the Marshall Plan and the Korean War. Historic D.S. ""Harry Truman"" as President, 1p. folio, Washington, Apr. 7, 1950, a hand-engrossed calligraphic appointment of Judge Irving R. Kaufman to the post of ""United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York"", co-signed by Attorney General J. HOWARD MCGRATH (1903 -1966). Interestingly, IRVING R. KAUFMAN (1910 - 1992), was a noted judge of U. S. District Court for the Southern District of New York from 1949 and judge of U. S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit from 1961-1987. He is famous for presiding over the Ethel and Julius Rosenberg espionage case, sentencing the couple to death for selling atomic secrets to the Russians. An important document as after less than a year in the position to which he is here appointed, Kaufman would send the Rosenbergs to their deaths. Framed in contemporary maple frame with minor scratches affecting the molding. Hand written dated portion of document affected by minor ink whisking, else very good, never folded.
