The unknown author writes in part: ""...The Espous Indians had a Custom of meeting every second or third Year with the Judges and Justices of the County of Ulster at Court to Renew the peace they formerly made with Governor Nicolls and to Brighten the Chain (as they term it) at which time the Indians made the Magistrates a present of a ball or String of Wampum and Some Other Trifles, which were sold and with that And Some more Money presents Were brought & given to the Indians. as the Espous Indians have been Supposed of having a hand in the Hostilities that have been Committed in Our part of the Country, we thought it our duty to acquaint you Honor with the s affair and humbly Request your Directions how to behave in it...we have nothing to gem them, If we should Refuse to meet them As formerly it might provoke them to sue the frontier Inhabitants Ill..."".
