TRENCH ART SELF-PROPELLED CANNON
TRENCH ART SELF-PROPELLED CANNON
One of the most involved pieces of trench art we have seen, an enormous tracked artillery gun measuring 40" long overall, the barrel alone being 28" long, and the entire piece standing about 12" high. The piece is entirely hand-made of various scavenged, repurposed and machined parts, with many working parts including a screw-in breech, gun elevation, tracks (built on a section of a leather belt), decorative gears and springs, etc. The artillery piece is further adorned with a coat of camouflage paint. Really a determined effort on the part of a soldier with a good amount of free time on his hands. Displayed: U.S. Naval War College Museum, Newport, RI. Provenance: The War Museum, New York.
