ROBERT WERE FOX (1754-1818) American merchant and diplomat, Consul of the United States at Falmouth. Good content A.L.S. as Consul with integral address leaf, 2pp. 4to., Falmouth, Oct. 5, 1801 to powerful American diplomat ROBERT R. LIVINGSTONE in Paris. As a peace treaty between France and England was being negotiated, Fox, in the port city of Falmouth, writes in part: "...Having just learned the great and joyful news of Preliminaries of Peace being signed...I take the liberty of addressing thee on behalf of my brother Thomas Were Fox...for the Appointment of their Agent at Falmouth...for assisting such of their Ships ot Subjects...". Marginal tear, else very good. Sold with: an engraved passport, 1p. sm. folio, London, Sep. 30, 1817, in French, issued to Joseph Fellows and signed by J. ADAMS SMITH, Charge d'Affaires; an 1815 British safe conduct pass issued to an American lady; a copy of the Calcutta Gazette, 1p. sm. folio, Oct. 6, 1809, announcing a treaty between Spain and Great Britain; and unrelated correspondence. Overall very good.
