Theodore Roosevelt Signed Check Endorsed by Daniel Sickles, 2.75" x 6.5", drawn for $50 on the Astor Trust Company, New York, May 15, 1911 and made out to "Major General D.E. Sickles". Sickles endorsed the verso above a hand-stamp impression reading, "GENERAL JOE WHEELER BUST COMMITTEE TREAS." Apparently the ex-President of the United States was here donating money to a fund managed by an ex-Union general on behalf of an ex-Confederate general. Fascinating. The check was canceled with tiny perforations as was customary. The Roosevelt signature is unscathed, whereas the Sickles signature is barely touched. Overall fine condition. At the time this check was presented, Sickles was the last surviving Union Army corps commander. A colorful character by any standard, Sickles would die the following year.
