TOURMALINE SLICE
Dunton Quarry, Newry, Maine (circa 1972)
Tourmaline mining is, at best, a hit or miss proposition: you tunnel through solid, barren rock until you hit a "pocket" filled with crystals, if you are lucky, or you just tunnel through solid, barren rock until you run out of money. The Plumbago Mining Company got lucky in 1972 and recovered enough gem tourmaline to partially fill a local bank vault. This polished slice from that discovery displays a classic 'watermelon' color pattern with a concentrically zoned pink core surrounded by a pastel green "rind" just like the namesake melon. Polished on both sides and measuring 2 ½ x 2 ¼ x 3/16 inches and has a custom stand.
