Although it appears to be an umbrella at first glance, this horn and bamboo cane houses a great Toledo steel sword. The L-shaped handle is horn that has been carved to resemble a knobby wood, and is nearly 5" high and 3.5" wide. There is a .5" band that is gold-plated connecting the handle to the brass sword fitting. The stabbing-type blade ismarked "TOLEDO" in bluing along with the other scroll-work bluing designs. The blade is 27" long with a 3/4 lengthfuller. Some of the bluing has worn off the top part of the blade, and there is very minor surface rust in the samearea. The bamboo shaft has a lacquered finish with a raised spiral texturing, and ends with a crutch-tip ferrule. Anold split in the bamboo was filled, but much of the filler has come out, and there are a few places where the lacquerfinish has come off. The button-activated catch no longer holds, although the button works. Overall length is justover 36".The spots where the lacquer is missing look like a thick lacquer did not adhere to the underlying bamboo.(EST 400-600)
