PORTRAIT OF MAJOR JOHN SNYDER. Oil on canvas depicting Major John Snyder (1818-1894) in full dress uniform of the Union Blues. An encampment is visible during drills in the background landscape. Reverse of canvas has the following in black paint "John Schneider, 33 years of age November 25, 1854". Housed in a carved wood and gesso original frame. There is some ambiguity with his age and the date shown on canvas. A handwritten inventory label identifies the artist as "Thomas Waterman, Woods, 1854" and "Major John Snyder, 1818–1892, Union Blues, NJSM". An Alexander Gallery, Madison Ave., New York label, affixed to the stretcher identifies by name and date the attributed artist and subject. A brass plaque accompanies the painting "Major John Snyder/1818–1892/Union Blues, N.J.S.M./ 1840/An Old Friend of the Old Guard". SIZE: overall 30" x 27", sight 23" x 20".
