THOMAS TINGEY (1750-1829) American Naval Captain; served in Revolutionary War; one of six Captains appointed when U.S. Navy was organized (1798). War of 1812 date ALS, "Thos Tingey", 3pp, Jan 10, 1813, 4to, Washington Navy Yard, to Major General Henry Dearborn (1751-1829) in Albany, nice content. In part, "...I have indeed again enter'd on the Command of a 'light frigate and the enterprise seemed somewhat daring, but we appear to go on tolerably smooth, having experienced no contrary gales...nor is there any apprehension of mutiny, on account of short rations, for as the whole body of the Crew, was inexperienced and undisciplined - I have started off with general orders of my own composing, with strict injunctions of implicit obedience, and they are considered as perfectly catholic and orthrodox...The papers would have announced to you, the 'resignations' from the Cabinet - We have heard you announced, as again to enter on the duties of the War Department...but I now learn that General [John] Armstrong has been nominated to & approved by the Senate..."
